Millennials Are Tyrants: Why People Hate Millennials

“The new changes that become a normal part of life for the youth, become a strange, new concept for adults and because of this cycle, it seems, each generation gets worse and worse.”

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

Many people mistakenly attribute this quote to Socrates when it was actually published by a Cambridge Ph.D. student in 1908 in a dissertation on social changes during the Hellenistic period in Greece.

Although the attribution of the quote was incorrect, it isn’t hard to believe that the adults in Ancient Greece would say something like that about the youth in that time.

The same quotation could’ve been passed a thousand years back or today or even a thousand years from today, and it would still be believable. As generations progress and times change, technology, culture, and thought constantly seem to progress towards a more “modern” ideology of that time.

The new changes that become a normal part of life for the youth, become a strange, new concept for adults and because of this cycle, it seems, each generation gets worse and worse.

PERHAPS THE ISSUE LIES IN OUR LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND TOLERANCE.

Conversely, if we take a look at the thoughts of the younger generations for their older generations, it’s full of the same distaste and annoyance over their lack of understanding and their “backward” thought. And this thought can be true for generations a thousand years back or a thousand years later.

Perhaps the issue lies in our lack of understanding and tolerance. Whether you lived in Ancient Greece, during the Renaissance or in current-day America, one thing has been proven to be true over and over again: we mistakenly hate the people we do not understand, and often when we do understand another group of people we being to diminish the hate and instead appreciate them and if not appreciate at least come at peace with them.

So while Millennials might seem like tyrants to some, and Baby Boomers to others, there is no underlying issue that needs to be scientifically or statistically proven to explain the hate some people may feel for another generation, it’s a matter of life that has been going on for time, may keep going on, but can be solved with small conversations on misunderstood actions and people.
